Training and Experience

Dr. Kristy Christopher-Holloway is the Founder and Director of New Vision Counseling Center, LLC.  She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Georgia and a Board Certified National Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).  Kristy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Louisiana State University in Shreveport, Louisiana, her Master of Science degree from Georgia State University, and her Doctor of Education in Counselor Education and Supervision from Argosy University-Atlanta.  She is also a Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC) and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) through the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE).

Kristy’s experience includes working with children, adolescents, and adults providing individual, group, couples and family therapy.  She has worked in settings to include private practice, in home, outpatient and residential treatment.  Kristy specializes in working with those who have experienced trauma and abuse and is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization) which can be used to treat troubling symptoms, such as anxiety, guilt, anger, depression, panic, abuse, self esteem and flashbacks that are the result of traumatic experiences.  EMDR is also beneficial to those who have a difficult time verbally expressing themselves, identifying emotions or who want to try something different from traditional “talk therapy”.   Kristy is also a Level II trained Reiki practioner and uses Reiki and energy balancing with clients as requested.

Kristy has presented workshops and trainings locally, nationally, and internationally with focuses on African Americans and mental health, addressing religion and spirituality when treating African American women, multicultural competence, trauma, anger and forgiveness, and mental health and infertility trauma in African American women. She has been a featured guest on Blog Talk Radio (listen here). She has also been a contributing guest for "Blogging While Blue"; a blog started by former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin (click here to read the blog), a featured guest therapist on the PKFaith radio show with music industry's, Portia Kirkland, and interviewed on healthy relationships for Heart and Soul Magazine.

Approach

Kristy is committed to helping everyday people who experience everyday problems and feels the best way to help her clients is to “meet them where they are”.  She believes in allowing her clients to set their own treatment goals and helping them when they are unable to identify where to begin.  She uses humor and a gentle, yet direct approach during therapy.  Kristy pulls from various theories to help her clients but focuses on how one’s thoughts, feelings and actions are connected and play a role into maladaptive behaviors.  Kristy enjoys engaging her clients in the therapeutic process through the use of various tools and homework assignments for clients who need "a little something extra".  On a case by case basis, Kristy offers ethical and HIPAA compliant distance counseling to Georgia clients via video or phone conferencing.
